Hamboree 2002

GCMac Booth attracts Hundreds to Hamboree

Hundreds of technology buffs paid a visit to the Gold Coast Mac booth the weekend of February 1st. Volunteers took the Macintosh message to the thousands attending the Tropical Hamboree at the Miami-Dade Youth Fair and Exposition center.
This short film shows how Gold Coast Mac and the Tropical Hamboree cooperated to being off a successful event!

For the second year running, Gold Coast Mac had a huge double booth in one of the busiest areas of the show. The location, paired with the hard work of our booth crew, paid off in large crowds surrounding the booth to see Macintosh technology at work, and to have a little fun.

People lined up both days of the show to take part in our now-famous Apple toss, where players were invited to toss plastic apples into the shell of a Lime iMac. Macintosh T-shirts provided by Apple User Group Program manager Garr Reynolds were given to winners, with consolation prizes for those whose aim was not quite as sure.

While people played at one side of the booth, on the other side they were getting questions answered from our volunteer Mac experts Charlie Carlon, Dave Game, and Esver Camacho, who also provided tech support for Macintosh users attending the show.

Technology demonstrations for iPhoto, iMovie, Virtual PC, and various ham radio software were offered on the big screen, and continuous presentations of GCMac produced iMovies were shown to people stopping by.

GCMac volunteers also handed out literature and membership applications, and answered lots of questions about the new iMac, which was generating a lot of interest even among non-Macintosh users.

The booth, which was provided free of charge by Hamboree organizers, was organized by past President Rose Lynn, who also coordinated the games and prizes. Vice President Jan Barkan was there both days to assist, and assistance was given by board member Guiseppe DiFranco and members John Hopkin, Joe Podgor, and Sandy Medina.

This year, the already striking booth was made easier to find thanks to two new banners promoting Gold Coast Mac, ten feet long and two feet high, funded by member volunteer fundraising efforts.
