| They stood for hours, often sloshing in beer. They slogged ice, snagged Cokes, hustled peanuts and poured enough beer to fill the Miami Circle.
And every penny they made, including tips, went right into the bank account of Gold Coast Mac for its operating expenses and educational programs. They are the volunteers who helped staff our concession stand at the Orange Bowl, and when the final event of 1999 was over, they had helped make Gold Coast Mac history.

Hardworking volunteers staff our regular

Heavy metal roared through the OB as Metallica and other bands took over the stadium for the entire day. This was a patricularly tricky event, because we had two booths and a responsibility to staff them for almost 12 hours. Thankfully, we had an excellent turnout, with too many volunteers to name here, but enough to allow people to work in shifts. Most of us had to wear earplugs for the music, but we tried to get into the spirit. President Rose Lynn dyed her hair to match the punks, while she and Fundraising Chair Yusty Salzman sported lip rings which proved, thankfully, to be fake.
The two booths Gold Coast Mac staffed at the Metallica concert generated almost $1500 dollars for our treasury, not including about $350 in tips. That marked the second largest fundraising event in GCM history, exceeding even the Rolling Stones concert in 1998.
When combined with the proceeds of University of Miami games and other events over the past year, thousands of dollars have been wrung from the Orange Bowl beer taps and the insatiable thirst of OB Patrons.
The money is expected to help us purchase a new Macintosh for presentations, and will help should we make the decision to purchase a new projector for meetings. The funds also help ease the burden of paying month to month expenses such as rent, newsletter and telephone expenses, and incidentals.
In appreciation, members who worked ther Metallica concert were given limited edition Gold Coast Mac ballcaps, paid for partially with past tip proceeds. As we enter a new year and a new milennium, the Orange Bowl and the volunteers who staff the concession stand will help provide us with the income we need to run the programs which benefit everyone.
Thanks to Richard Lynn of Orange Bowl Concessions and David Lynn Catering for being such a strong GCM supporter, and for giving us the chance to work for a better organization!
