| Panther Event at MacCenter |
When Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced that Apple would release its next major version of OSX before the end of the year, most Apple-watchers translated that into Apple-speak, and interpreted that to mean somewhere around Christmas, 2003.
This time, Apple fooled everyone by announcing that Panther, the street name for OSX 10.3, would be released to the public at a launch party Friday, October 24th.
Apple stores around the country, including stores at The Falls, Boca Raton and Wellington Green, joined resellers like Fort Lauderdales MacCenter, in releasing the software to the public at 8 PM.
That release has been anticipated since Jobs revealed a host of major updates in June, at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. While Panther is critical for the success of Apples new G5 Computers, it will also run on many older machines, and provides a host of enhancement for any machine on which it will run.
A completely new Finder takes a page from the iTunes method of navigating files, and puts all of your network places, disks, and desktop into one easily navigated tray. This provides a vastly improved view of the system, with one-click access to your favorite files and folders, whether on your hard drive, network servers, iDisk, or thinks like Firewire drives.
Early reports on Panther have been good, in terms of upgrading and stability. But some issues have been reported with some software and FireWire drives. Also, a reccomendation has been made that installs be done as "clean install" as opposed to upgrading existing OSX installs and keeping your settings. Check out www.macfixit.com for more.
